Match Report: Kilmarnock 0 Portsmouth 5

Last updated : 31 July 2003 By Alex Dale
Portsmouth expected a stern test from the Rugby Park side, but took the lead after only two minutes when Yakubu, recovered from illness, slotted in a through ball from Steve Stone. Not long after, it was Teddy Sheringham who continued his white hot pre season form with another fantastic goal.

The Killies had no answer to Portsmouth's exciting play and Yakubu again slotted the ball home in a simular vein to his first goal to give Pompey a commanding 1st half lead.

The fourth goal was the pick of the bunch. Sheringham and Stone's link up play allowed Vincent Pericard to lash a shot which rebounded off Teddy and into the corner out of Meldrum's reach.

Stone connected with a cross after 75 minutes to complete Kilmarnock's destruction and put to rest worries Blues fans may have harboured about Pompey's lacklusture pre-season form. The match was one-way traffic throughout and although Kilmarnock would surely struggle in the Premiership, if Portsmouth put forward displays like this when the season starts proper, we can be confident of survival.
