Younes Snatches Point At Sunderland

Last updated : 13 December 2009 By Jim Bonner
Younes Kaboul's late goal at the Stadium of Light yesterday reminded me why I love football.

This year has been one of the most testing in terms of supporting the club I love and maintaining interest in a situation that often presents itself as hopeless.

However, when Kaboul prodded in that equaliser with just seconds of the game to go, the passion flooded back and I celebrated like a madman for the first time since Kanu slid in that second goal against AC Milan last year.

Because despite the poor showing and the hopeless moments where our players kept slipping up or getting in each others way, that point-saving equaliser was well worth waiting 93 minutes for and justified the 600-odd mile round trip.

It seems that Steve Bruce's side forgot one of the most golden rules in football because no matter how poor the opposition are, they always have a chance at 1-0 down and although Darren Bent gave the hosts the lead after Henderson 'megged Wilson and then crossed in a ball that Pompey failed to deal with, they never created much after that.

Andy Reid came close when he hit the crossbar with a free kick in the second half but apart from that, James didn't have anything significant to do. That was largely down to a stubborn defence led by an outstanding Kaboul.

Unfortunately, (and this is where the rant begins) the Pompey midfield and frontline were virtually ineffective and never once tested Fulop. Kanu tried his best to create an opening against a weakened Sunderland defence but he had little support from a midfield that were outbattled and Aruna Dindane who constantly lost the ball.

In fact, the game was such dross that the most interesting event to happen during the first half came off the pitch, as some stewards ejected some Pompey fans for standing up, which got all of Westwood's mob agitated as an intoxicated John PFC sang "The stewards are a bunch of Nazis" or words to that effect...

The second half performance was slightly better as Pompey actually managed to win a few corners and keep the ball for longer than five seconds, but I still thought we hadn't done enough to deserve an equaliser because we hardly gave Fulop a problem all game.

So that just made the last minute steal even more sweeter!

The Frenchman removed his shirt and rushed to the scattering of Pompey fans in the away end who mobbed him before being taken out by the stewards. Kaboul then received his second yellow card and was sent off for his celebration, meaning he'll now miss the next game at Chelsea.

The Sunderland fans to our left had been goading us with chants of "going down" during the game but Kaboul had stunned them and they were soon booing their team off as Pompey had snatched a late result at the Stadium of Light for the second season in a row.

People will moan that we needed to win this game given Sunderland's problems and our situation and they'll moan that we were poor and were once again lucky to get a result that we didn't deserve.

My response is simply: Who cares? A lucky manager is better than a good one and right now it seems like fortune is smiling upon Avram Grant whereas it frowned at Paul Hart. The travelling fans that got up at an ungodly hour to go to the game were rewarded and Pompey's hopes of survival have been kept alive.

But with all last-minute-delerium aside, Pompey need to improve drastically over the next few games if we're to take anything from Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal.

And we all know that we have to win at Upton Park come Boxing Day, if we do then perhaps we should all remove our shirts in celebration!
