That time of year is almost upon us. January is just around the corner and with Harry Redknapp in charge it's always going to be an exciting month as he buys more players than women buy shoes. But who is on the Pompey gaffer's shopping list?

Harry has highlighted that his priorities lie in getting a direct, pacy winger and some defenders into the club. He's also hinted that a new striker might be needed to be brought to Fratton Park. But just who does Harry have in mind?

Shaun Wright-Phillips' future at Chelsea looks less than secure as on Sunday he put in yet another less than impressive performance against Arsenal as a sub. He might be allowed to leave on loan or perhaps even permanently. However having cost the Champions in excess of £20 million it's unlikely that the Blues are going to let him go on the cheap.

Then there's the competiton we would face for him. There's no doubt that he's a top player as he proved in his Man City days and no doubt they'd be happy to take him back. West Ham have also openly expressed an interest but I'm not sure he'd want to move to a relegation threatened side, although the same could have been said for D'Alessandro and ourselves last season.

Newcastle, Liverpool and Arsenal are also rumoured to be interested so we'd have a massive task to convince him to sign for us ahead of them although our good business relationship with Chelsea could help.

It might be more likely that we try again for Sulley Muntari of Udinese. The Italian club are currently maligned in midtable with Muntari not having the best of times himself having only scored once in 10 appearances and getting sent off twice this season. The fee of £10 million sounds outrageously high for the 22-year-old Ghanian. This is Harry Redknapp though and we know what he can do with players not fulfilling their potential.

A cheaper alternative to Muntari would be West Brom's Zoltan Gera. He has already proved he can make an impact in the Premiership and it shouldn't be too difficult to poach the 27-year-old Hungarian from a Championship club struggling to mount a promotion challenge.

It doesn't take a genius to work out that we're badly in need of defensive cover. If Sol Campbell or Linvoy Primus get injured for a sustained period of time we are in big, big trouble. Redknapp has suggested that he'll go in for Matthew Upson of Birmingham but it's likely that we'll face stiff competiton from Liverpool and Newcastle. Knowing Birmingham they're also going to want mega bucks for him but with Sacha's backing that shouldn't be a problem....right?

I'd say we're also in need of specialist full back cover. I'm sure Harry was cursing himself for letting Brian Priske go when Glen Johnson got injured. Noe Pamarot did a fine job in his place but is now needed at left back with Stefanovic out for a considerable length of time. Harry will possibly need to find backup for Johnson should he get injured again.

Michael Ball; formerly of Rangers and Everton is not happy with his lack of playing time at PSV Eindhoven and has admitted that he'd like a move back to England. The 27-year-old has been linked to Pompey and Blackburn so we'll have to see what happens with this one as we are pretty desperate for left sided cover.

Finally, January wouldn't be complete without a striker purchase now would it? We're in a bit of a crisis when it comes to fit forwards at the moment so I'm sure we'll invest in another frontman come 2007. But who?

David Nugent seems to be the main one linked to us, however Harry has recently stated that he is well overpriced. Not only that but it's rumoured that if the 21-year-old left Preston he would almost surely sign for Everton. Although Nugent himself has stated that he wants to help North End get to the big league so I don't think Nugent will be a Pompey player anytime soon.

Redknapp also says that the only other striker in the lower divisions worth looking at is Fredy Eastwood of Southend United. Southend are miles off the pace at the bottom of the Coca Cola Championship and might be tempted to sell the 23-year-old. He has scored 11 goals (7 in the league) in a struggling side this season but for the rumoured £5 million to take him on, is he really worth it?

I can't help but think that Jermain Defoe will be a Pompey player by the end of January either. I know he's been getting more playing time with Spurs recently but that's only due to Robbie Keane's injury.

Defoe has claimed in the past that he's been frustrated at his lack of chances under Martin Jol and although Harry has said that getting Defoe is unlikely I can't help but think we'll put in a ridiculous offer for him that Spurs will accept and Defoe will be unveiled in a press conference saying how delighted he is to be working with Harry Redknapp again.

Of course, we have to have substanstial funds if we're going to get some of the above targets mentioned. Watch this space.
