Where Are They Now?: Volume II

Harry Redknapp is known for being a wheeler-dealer gaffer and because of his tendancy to buy virtually a whole new team every transfer window Fratton Park has seen many comings and goings under his management. This article focuses on the players that took part in the championship winning season and our time in the Premiership until Harry left.

Shaka Hislop

The reliable shot-stopper left Pompey for West Ham as we all know and then featured in last season's FA Cup Final where the Hammers were cruelly beaten on penalties. Shaka then went to the World Cup with Trinidad and Tobago and played a couple of blinders but decided to leave England for the USA and now plays for FC Dallas.

Hayden Foxe

Hayden Foxe played a part in our promotion winning season but ended up in the wilderness during our first season in the top flight due to injury that kept him out for a long time. Alain Perrin decided not to renew his contract when it expired in 2005 after a trial and he was released. Foxe was forgotten about until August this year when Leeds United trialled him and signed him permanently.

Arjan De Zeeuw

As well all should know, he was sold to Wigan after not getting on with Alain Perrin. It ended up being one of the most stupid things Pompey have done. He helped Wigan achieve a top-half finish in the Premiership as captain.

Gianluca Festa

The uncompromising Italian defender left Pompey after helping us to promotion for Serie B side Cagliari. After helping them achieve promotion to Serie A he moved on after just one season to non-league side Nuorese. Festa helped Nuorese to consecutive promotions from non-league to Serie D and now Serie C2. He is still at the club now at the ripe old age of 37.

Eddie Howe

The young Pompey defenders career at Fratton Park ended up being cut short because of constant injury problems and he ended up moving to Bournemouth. He's still a regular in the Cherries' side and is now re-united with Kevin Bond.

Paul Merson

The excellent Pompey captain left Pompey at the end of our promotion winning season to join Walsall where he soon became manager. Unfortunately for Merse he took them down to League One and left as they eventually got relegated to League Two. "Magic" did agree to play for non-league Tamworth at the start of the season but only made one appearance for them before deciding to hang up his boots for good.

Nowadays Merse features regularly as a pundit for Sky Sports and is often seen previewing Pompey matches live on TV. He also recently took part in "The Match" where a celebrity side take on a team of legends. Merse showed he still had it and was instrumental in the victory for the legends. He also played in Alan Knight's testimonial in 2005.

Nigel Quashie

It's believed Quashie left Pompey because he wanted to be payed more and didn't want to wait until the end of the current season to renegotiate his contract. He moved down the road as we all know, got humiliated in the "4-1" massacre of the Saints in April and then got relegated, meaning he probably had to take a pay cut to stay with Southampton anyway. He moved to West Brom in January last season and then got relegated again!

Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke....

Steve Stone

The instrumental and well-liked winger left Pompey under a bit of a cloud after being left out of the final games of the 04/05 season by Alain Perrin so that he wasn't obliged to give him a new contract for the following season. Stoney left for Leeds but a horrendous knee injury kept him out the whole season. He has made a comeback though and this season has seen him appear for the Yorkshire side as well as chip in with the odd goal.

Tim Sherwood

Tim played for us during our championship season and our first season in the Premiership. He was released at the end of that season and joined Coventry where he eventually retired from the game and now works as an occasional pundit for Sky.

Carl Robinson

He could never make the grade at Pompey and once we were promoted he was sold to Sunderland where he earnt promotion once again. However after being seen as surplus to requirements in the Premiership he dropped down to the Championship once again to play for Norwich City where he is to this day.

Kevin Harper

Played a part in Pompey's promotion season but was never seen as good enough for the Premiership and subsequently joined Stoke City where he remains right now.

Deon Burton

The Jamaican international left Pompey after loan spells with Swindon and Walsall during the 03/04 season. He then joined League One Sheffield Wednesday and got loaned to Brentford for that season before sticking with the Owls the following season, helping them achieve promotion to the Championship. He has currently scored one goal for Wednesday this season.

Vincent Pericard

Signed by ex-Pompey boss Tony Pulis to play for Stoke. He scored against Sunderland in a 2-1 win for the Potters yesterday and currently has 3 goals to his name this season. The former Juventus man also had loan spells at Sheffield United and Plymouth prior to his release in the summer.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni

It's quite funny to remember that one of the Premierships most rated hitmen started with us in the first division regarded as a third choice striker behind Toddy and Pericard. After snagging him for £500,000 from Maccabi Haifa, Yakubu was eventually sold to Middlesbrough for £7.5 million after the 04/05 season. He scored and missed a penalty for Boro against Everton last weekend.
