Although it's fair to say that our future and survival is very much within our own hands, there's still a large amount of interest - as always in relegation battles - on the fortunes of those around us in the table. After all, as much as we can do ourselves, if someone else does us a favour then so much the better.
Blackburn, who started the day one point and one place above us, moved further ahead with a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford. Despite them increasing the gap, a win for us tomorrow (pleasepleaseplease) would still haul us above them into 14th place.
But the best news of the day is that not a single team below us managed to pick up a single point. Southampton were beaten 3-1 at home by Chelsea courtesy of Lampard and two goals from Gudjohnsen, although substitute Kevin Phillips had made the scoreline 2-1 for a short while. Palace lost a close encounter 1-0 to Middlesbrough, Frank Queudrue (who bizarrely might be playing for Ireland in the near future courtesy of his grandmother) scoring the only goal of the game. Finally, Norwich were on the receiving end of a Thierry Henry hat trick - much like ourselves - as they went down 4-1 at Highbury.
Elsewhere, Fulham (of course) don't play until tomorrow, and West Brom face Everton at The Hawthorns in a difficult game for Bryan Robson's side. But off the back of a 4-1 away win at Charlton, they'll certainly feel they have a chance.
What all that means is that we're four points from Southampton (if you're bothered by that sort of thing), five points from Palace and the crucial drop zone, not to mention eleven from Norwich who are now getting left behind at the bottom of the league. A draw tomorrow would be a very good result, a win bloody brilliant - but the "safety net" of all those defeats today means that even if we get beaten at Craven Cottage tomorrow, at least we're not going to be losing any ground to those below us.
