It's a common theme for most clubs that there's a couple of players who are guaranteed to show up and play well seemingly every time. Huddersfield fans, for example, have had to put up with Steve Claridge bashing goals past them since the beginning of time. Now it's just our luck that the one of the hottest young talents in English football has decided that, out of all the Premier League teams, we're the one he most enjoys scoring against.
There's no great disgrace in that fact, but it's incredibly irritating. Flashback to last season and who was it scoring the winner for Everton in their only away win of the season? That's right, Wayne Rooney. Who was it who was able to foul their way through the game, punch Matt Taylor, push over Steve Stone, walk off down the tunnel at one point and get called on to only get given a yellow card - that's right, Wayne Rooney.
Then we went to Goodison, and who scored the only goal to decide the match? Who ran the entire length of the pitch to celebrate with an ear-cocking celebration in front of our fans? That's right, Wayne Rooney.
Perhaps some of us thought that the tide had turned when, despite playing ninety minutes and having a couple of chances, Rooney was on the losing side against us for the first time. We were the last team to beat United, 2-0 on that famous day in October, and the boy wonder only came away from Fratton Park with a yellow card to show for his efforts.
Which neatly brings us on to yesterday's match.
Personally I really enjoyed the game as a contest which was probably more to do with the fact that I wasn't expecting us to get anything. Our safety isn't going to be decided by playing Manchester United and Arsenal away, it's going to be won and lost in three crucial remaining home games - Charlton, Bolton and Southampton. Ok so a point is still a point and it would've been nice, but going to a game expecting a three or four goal hammering and actually playing damn well and perhaps deserving a draw made me enjoy the match that little bit more.
I've had a chance to look around and digest what other fans have said about the game, and some of the comments bemuse me. Chalkias is still getting stick despite a flawless game yesterday - oh, but wait, he "went down too early" for the second goal. Of course if it had been Ashdown or Shaka in that position, then it would've been completely the fault of the defence, or credit to - that's right, Wayne Rooney - for a wonderful turn, deft dummy to send the keeper to the deck and clinical finish. But no, it must be Chalky, because that's the easy option.
Meanwhile, Yakubu has come under a bit of pressure again. Personally I thought he did alright yesterday considering he was playing up front pretty much on his own, and certainly ran a lot more than he has lately. LuaLua started poor but got better as the game went on, and seemed to find his touch a bit more which was noticeably absent at the start of the game. But he was playing slightly out of position and it's to his credit that he still made a good go of it. Matty Taylor was back on song after a bit of a mess in his last game against Villa - if he can do well away at Old Trafford AND get into a fight with a Neville, then his career can only get better from this point on.
A word for Andy Griffin too; never popular with some fans at the start of the season who didn't seem willing to give him a chance and now some have done a complete about turn and are announcing that "we've missed him". It's true, we have - he put in some great tackles yesterday, and thankfully the supporters are finally realising he's not actually that bad. In fact, he's quite good.
Ok, so the weeks are running out and we need to get points on the board. Like I said after Villa, it'll probably still get worse before it gets better with a trip to Highbury next weekend. But the teams around us - Birmingham and Fulham in particular - aren't really doing themselves any favours either and don't seem to be in a rush to leave us stranded. What's more, it's not just Yakubu who is now scoring goals, as O'Neil's fantastic strike showed. One of our big problems this season has been relying on the inconsistent Nigerian to win our matches, so let's hope this sees the start of sharing them about a bit.
It's just a shame that United's two goal hero and all round man of the match was - that's right, Wayne Rooney.
