Various sources have reported that Portsmouth are going to make a £4 million bid for French international Patrick Vieira.
Whilst there is probably little truth in this rumour, you can no longer laugh off this kind of speculation like most would have a year ago. The 31-year-old is currently injured but has travelled with the France squad who looked a bit lost without him as they played a dire 0-0 draw with Romania.
Thankfully from Pompey's point of view Lassana Diarra didn't play during that game meaning the vultures didn't get a chance to cast their glaring eyes over him. Despite Pompey claiming that he is not for sale I think it would be very difficult to keep hold of him if a massive club (unlike Tottenham who have been linked) came in for him.
But then do we really need another midfield enforcer at Pompey? We have Diarra, Diop, Muntari, Mendes, Davis and Hughes who can do that already and although we Vieira is probably better than all of them I think we could be spending our money on strengthening the weaker parts of the team, especially as the French captain would command huge wages.
That situation will surely change as at least one of those players will leave during the summer but unless it is either Muntari or Diarra leaving then we shouldn't be looking at Vieira despite his big name.
You can't rule out the possibility of either of the previous players leaving, especially with Marcelo Mattos' agent has confirmed that Portsmouth have bid for the player despite Peter Storrie denying it a few days ago. Why would be bid for another central midfielder when we already have plenty at the club?
Pompey have also been linked with Celtic full back Lee Naylor and Reading left back Nicky Shorey as competition for an ageing Hermann Hreidarsson.
However, the main talk for the time being will be about Vieira and the possibility of him coming to Portsmouth. I personally don't see it happening but stranger things have happened...
