Summer is never boring being a Pompey fan especially when Harry Redknapp is at the helm. Here's a round up of everyone we have been linked to recently:
Goalkeepers
Jerzy Dudek: Paper talk has linked Jerzy to a move down south after falling out of favour at Liverpool with a price of £1.5 million being touted for the Champions League winner. We only have two goalkeepers but would someone as dodgy as Jerzy get in the team ahead of Deano? He may have a European Championship medal but then so does Djimi Traore...
Jussi Jaaskelainen: Another rumour spouted from the papers though a lot more unbelieveable than the Dudek one. Why would Jussi move from Bolton to Pompey? Money talks but would its voice would have to be deafening for Jussi to even consider Fratton Park in exchange for The Reebok.
Charles Itandje: Plys his trade at RC Lens and I'm reliably informed by a fan of the French club that he is "very good but prone to the odd mistake" and she would rather see him stay at the club. So he seems pretty reliable and he could be part of a double swoop along with Olivier Thomert if reports in France are to be believed.
Jose Molina: Released by Deportivo La Coruna Moilna has expressed a desire to play in The Premiership. At 35 he's getting on a bit but if by chance he does sign he would bring a wealth of big game experience to the team, whether we need that with Dean Kiely already here is another question altogether.
Defenders
Peter Mate: Said to be one of the best prospects in Hungarian football, Mate currently plays for the under 21 national side as well as for club side Debrecen. He is "most likely to be playing in The Premiership" according to sources and with the defence needing some major surgery over the summer, he would most likely be a welcome addition to the squad.
Robert Huth: Was supposedly a target for us and could still well be however Wigan have had a bid of £5,500,000 accepted for the tall German defender so a move to Fratton Park looks pretty distant for the time being.
Midfielders
Achille Emana: This one looks like the most likely deal to be completed first as it has been admitted that Pompey and Toulouse are negotiating over his transfer. Arsenal and Lyon have been after the man whose playing style is apparently similar to that of Michael Essien. Emana has expressed his desire to move to Pompey partly because of his friendship with Benjani so I wouldn't be suprised if we tied up this deal before the World Cup started.
Olivier Thomert: Apparently quite highly rated by the press my Lens supporting friend suggests otherwise by saying "You can have him! He's a creative midfielder who plays on the left but only plays well when he wants to and likes giving the ball away. He's also a bit moody!" Does that remind you of a certain other "highly rated" left sided frenchman who recently won the Fratton Faithful award of "Worst Signing"?
Lee Hendrie: The rumour has returned from January! He's tempermental but could do a job for us in midfield. Redknapp has been an admirer of Hendrie and having fallen out of favour with David O'Leary there could be a move on the cards here.
Strikers
Nikola Zigic: The giant Serb is being watched by Harry tommorow and is highly rated by many people in the game having an impressive strike rate for Red Star Belgrade. At 6'8 he would be a handful for any defence but is rated at £7,000,000. If Pompey wanted to show the rest of the Premiership what sort of backing they have then signing a player who is being chased by top clubs... and Blackburn Rovers would certainly be the way to do it.
Andy Johnson: Always going to be linked to us because of our finances however reports say we have been "priced out" of a move for Johnson however I'd say it was more of an over-valuation at the staggering price of £8,500,000. Everton, Bolton and Wigan have all had bids accepted at that price and although Pompey could scupper those by making a higher bid, it looks unlikely that we would pay so much for one player.
Henri Camara: Paul Jewell has said that Camara is going nowhere. Wigan fans reckon he could be tempted to leave Wigan to work with a former manager and for a tidy sum of £5,000,000. His quality can't be denied and if we were to buy him at least he wouldn't score against us anymore!
Duncan Ferguson: Released by Everton and being chased by Sheffield Wednesday. I sincerely hope Harry isn't seriously considering taking on a striker who looks past it now. The same could be said for Heskey and Lee Trundle. With our backing we really should be aiming higher than these guys surely?
That just about rounds it up for the time being, there have been other names loosely linked like Matthew Upson, Mamadou Niang and Diego Forlan among others. We shall have to wait and see what's on the horizon but at least we know summer won't be dull!
