There hasn't been much transfer speculation about Pompey recently so it's only fair that some players should get linked to us with the transfer window getting ever closer. Fratton Faithful brings you up to date with the latest speculation.
Harry Redknapp has recently expressed his admiration of Birmingham defender Matthew Upson. He's currently working his way back from a long injury and only has 18 months left on his contract. Serial squinny David Sullivan has admitted that his club are braced for Premiership clubs coming in for him in January and that he could well be on his way in the new year.
I think the 27-year-old would be a decent addition to the squad. When he's at his best he wins everything and also takes control of dangerous situations. I'd like to see him in a Pompey shirt so long as the price isn't too high. Linvoy isn't going to last too much longer at 33 and no doubt we will have injuries to cope with in 2007. Strength in depth in defence is something we really need to look at when the transfer market re-opens.
Another player Harry has been rumoured to be after is former England Under-21 International Greg Halford. Halford currently plays for Championship side Colchester United and can play virtually anywhere on the pitch. More importantly he currently plays at right back; a position we need to address following Glen Johnson's injury that looks to keep him out for a while. With Pamarot being more of a centre back and Griffin & Duffy being out on loan we are short of players in that position.
I don't know much about the player but he is said to be highly rated and he is also on the transfer list after expressing his desire to move to the Premiership after Sheffield United put in a bid for him in the summer. The tabloids have linked us to a £2 million move for the utility man and if he is as good as some people say, then he'll be very welcome here.
Sky Sports are reporting that Pompey scouts went to watch Andre-Pierre Gignac in France which will only add fuel to the speculation earlier in the year claiming he was being looked at. The 21-year-old has scored 4 goals for Lorient this season and has expressed his desire to move to England in the past.
Watch this space lads and lasses. I'm sure there will be another 50 players linked to us before the transfer window ends on February 1st 2007. But then we wouldn't have it any other way would we?
