Three Lions Restore Pride

After my rant about the English national side yesterday, I feel my faith has been somewhat restored after what the players in England shirts did to Croatia tonight.

I don't think even the most optimistic England fan would have predicted a 4-1 victory in Zagreb against a team who have never tasted defeat in a competitive match on home soil. This is definitely the best England result since the infamous 5-1 hammering of Germany in Munich.

David James was the only Pompey player to start the game tonight and looked a bit shaky having dropped the ball from a cross (despite the clear barge in his back) but generally had nothing to do.

Fabio Capello got his team selection spot on but I don't think even he would have known the impact Theo Walcott would have made. It seems like the move from that second rate club down the road is finally looking like paying off after his marvellous hat-trick.

Wayne Rooney finally justified his inclusion in the side with a well taken goal and a decent all round game. Frank Lampard also played really well and was unlucky to have such a superb goal ruled out after a great England move.

Yes, "great England move". I can't remember the last time I said that. England actually looked like a team tonight and played some excellent passing football too.

The Croatians may have brilliant support but it must have been soul destroying to see the visiting fans chant "ole!" as their team were being completely outplayed on their own turf.

It could have been even better if the referee gave a penalty when Heskey was being held in the area by Simunic. Heskey was far more effective than Defoe would have been tonight, which is good news for us Pompey fans as he'll be fresh for the Middlesbrough game on Saturday.

The only negative is that we conceded but even then there was a high boot on John Terry that wasn't penalised. Jamo might have saved Mandzukic's shot if he was in a Pompey jersey but he still wasn't as bad as Ashley Cole who looks a shadow of the player he was in his Arsenal days.

Anyway, I'm nitpicking what was a fantastic performance by England to produce a stunning result that will make the rest of Europe stand up and take notice. Yes, Croatia were as poor as Harry Redknapp said they were but that should take nothing away from the result.

I still admit that I'll celebrate a gritty 1-0 over Boro more than this result on Saturday if it happened but most of the players wearing white tonight have made me believe in the team once again.

On a final note, there were other Pompey players playing for their countries today.

Having come on as sub to score a late equaliser against Switzerland last weekend, Ben Sahar started for Israel in Moldova as his side won 2-1 but the 19-year-old didn't find the net this time.

Lassana Diarra had a better time tonight than at the weekend after playing the full game against Serbia which the French won 2-1 thanks to goals from Theirry Henry and Nicolas Anelka.

There was little cheer for Hermann Hreidarsson though as Iceland suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to Scotland.
