There are two sides to Laurent Robert. The one that Pompey fans will be hoping to see is the bag of tricks who will occasionally lump it into the back of the net from fifty yards. Unfortunately, we've already been gifted an early opportunity to see what happens when it all goes horrifically wrong and Laurent isn't happy.
An interview he gave to "The Sun" which was spread over two days has ended up with Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd taking the hard-line towards the winger, fining him two weeks wages - twice - and also reporting him to the FA. Yes, his own player. And you thought that we were a bit of a soap opera sometimes.
To be fair to Laurent, you can't really argue with any of the comments he makes and I have to say I agree with his intense dislike of Graeme Souness. But the difference is that my opinion is completely irrelevant and I have no professional relationship with Graeme Souness. If I were to say that I thought he was a rubbish manager with no man-management skills and favours a dour style of play, that would be up to me. Robert may think that, but he can't say it. Or certainly shouldn't.
Even so, here's a couple of snippets of what he said anyway;
"He's just a child"
"He will get nowhere screaming at players and slamming doors"
"We finished last season so badly that, towards the end, I just laughed at him"
Laurent. Matey. Me old mucker. You're a fantastically talented footballer and you have the chance to become a legend here. You got dropped at Newcastle, get over it. This is a fresh start and a chance to get your career going again - why bother raking up old graves like this? I've no doubt that he was talking to a journalist just angling for these sort of quotes, but it's time to be the bigger man and move on.
I just hope this isn't a worrying look into the future of what could happen here, although with Perrin's new assistant arriving on Friday with his previous no-nonsense reputation and six month ban for assaulting an opposition player, I'm sure any sort of problems like this will be stamped out (literally) very quickly.
