It's hard to get used to, watching an England game and seeing the starting line-ups and the bench with Pompey players that don't look out of place in the squad!
Think back a year ago when Pompey fans were clamouring for Gary O'Neil and Matthew Taylor to earn a call up to the England side. Pompey hadn't had a player of theirs represent the Three Lions for over two decades but it looked like that O'Neil and Taylor might earn a call up.
A year on and it's quite ironic that these two players are now playing for unfashionable clubs that could end up in the Championship next year, whilst there is a different calibre of player at Pompey and they are now either making the England squad or have been involved in the last year.
It begs the question: were Gario and Matty ever good enough to play for England in the first place? In hindsight, probably not as the Pompey players who have represented England in the past year are arguably in a different class, and I say this with all due respect to O'Neil and Taylor.
David James started against Switzerland yesterday, meaning that when we chant "England's Number One" that we can chant it with some conviction unlike in the past. He's probably the best goalkeeper to ever pull on a Pompey shirt and is well deserving of his place.
Jermain Defoe was an unused substitute during the 2-1 win but if he keeps finding the net for his club then sooner or later his country will be calling for him to start future internationals.
Glen Johnson was in the preliminary squad to face Switzerland which shows that he is in Capello's thoughts. Gary Neville isn't going to last too much higher at the top level, Micah Richards could be groomed as a centre back and Wes Brown isn't exactly brilliant so maybe Glen could be an England regular in the future if he continues to improve.
Other Pompey players to feature for England in the last year are Sol Campbell and David Nugent, although Sol's international career is probably over now whilst Nuge has a lot to do to get himself back into the set up.
Fabio Capello played a defensive midfielder in Gareth Barry against the Swiss, but surely Sean Davis is better suited to that role and could do a better job at protecting the back four? We might find out if Harry gives him enough time in the Pompey side.
Even if he doesn't, at least Portsmouth Football Club is finally being recognised as a club that can give players to the English international set-up and that was something that was almost unthinkable not so long ago.
