OH MY GOD! DID YOU SEE THAT!? WHAT A GOAL!
Those were my words after witnessing Matthew Taylor's superb wonder-volley from at least 35 yards early in the first half. I'm sure that you would have said something similar if you saw it too. That goal was something special and has to be one of the top contenders for Premiership goal of the season.
After a slow start, Taylor, who was a doubt for todays game, lit up Fratton Park as the ball came off an Everton player in the middle of the park and whilst it was in the air the Pompey midfielder lashed the ball from just over the centre circle. The ball screamed over the helpless Tim Howard and straight into the centre of the net!
Taylor went absolutely mental in celebration after that and who could blame him? It was a cracking goal and it galvanised the team to get another one. Gary O'Neil got the better of Nuno Valente and put in a great cross for Kanu to volley across goal to score his ninth of the season. His goal was also of the highest quality as as soon as the ball left the Nigerian's foot you knew exactly where it was heading.
Everton were overwhlemed in the first half as they couldn't handle our fluid football as we created several other chances. Their only chance came when James Beattie forced David James into a good save. Apart from that he didn't seem to take his abuse very well as Sol Campbell had him in his pocket all game and the referee also booked him for gobbing off. The announcement of his substitution at half time was met with a loud cheer from the Pompey fans!
The visitors came out stronger in the second half after Pompey's dominance in the first. They huffed and puffed, Van Der Mayde caused problems and had looked to have dived but I saw how Taylor cheekily tripped him. However Andy Johnson was kept relatively quiet and Sean Davis, who had a great game, bossed the midfield.
Fratton Park gave its own rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" as the Toffees could not find their way past a rock solid back four and David James in goal. The final whistle blew to signify a sixth home win and another clean sheet in the bag for Jamo and Kanu is once again the Premiership's top scorer.
The only down points to this match were the injuries to Kanu and Benjani. They didn't look that bad and I think it's just a case of keeping them protected for the rest of the year as they're our only two fit strikers.
In the end two quality goals and superb defending made this game a lot easier than many thought it would be. Pompey have ended another curse this season and we're now back to third in the league after seventeen games played! Who could have predicted that at the start of the season!?
Still... what a goal!
Pompey Player Ratings
David James: 7 - Did what he had to do. Saved us the embarassment of conceding to Scummer Beattie.
Glen Johnson: 8 - Did very well against his namesake Andy. Supported the team well going forward.
Linvoy Primus: 8 - Won everything in another great display and was very alert to what danger Everton conjured up.
Sol Campbell: 8 - Had the Everton strikers in his pocket all game.
Noe Pamarot: 8 - Flourishing in his run in the team. Another great display filling in at left back.
Gary O'Neil: 7 - Got about the pitch well and his delivery was quality, especially the assist for Kanu's goal.
Manuel Fernandes: 7 - Very busy and assured. Not quite £7 million quality yet but once he finds his feet in the Premiership, he'll be a star.
Sean Davis: 9 - Superb all-round display on his return to the side. Combative, calm and creative. Only Taylor's goal stops Davis winning the Fratton Faithful MOTM award.
Matthew Taylor: 9 - Outstanding goal and an excellent overall performance. He can do no wrong at the moment! Man Of The Match.
Benjani: 7 - Harried the Everton defence and did more than his fair share of the work at the back. Was also wrongly called offside when he was clean through.
Kanu: 8 - Held the ball up well and took his goal superbly. Still confounding his critics.
