Sunday Squad Thoughts

Last updated : 03 August 2008 By Jim Bonner
It's Sunday and the start of the new season is only a week away (if you count the Community Shield as an "official" game) so how is the squad shaping up and do we really need Shaun Wright-Phillips?

The transfer talk has died down recently with scarce rumours of David Nugent interesting Ipswich and the possible imminent arrival of Younes Kaboul from Tottenham (so long as he doesn't cost too much) being the only real talking points of the week.

Nicky Shorey is probably on his way too so long as we match Reading's valuation but the likelihood of Shaun Wright-Phillips coming to Pompey is diminishing.

I can't see many, if any of the other names the papers have linked us with joining us. Harry says he doesn't need any more strikers which would rule out Eidur Gudjohnsen amongst others arriving, even if Nugent was to leave.

I still believe that we need another central midfielder if Sean Davis leaves as expected. That is unless Harry decides to play Niko Kranjcar in the middle behind the front two but seeing as we are already light on players who can play wide I doubt Redknapp is thinking about that as we have plenty of bodies for the central midfield position until Davis is sold.

If Shorey and Kaboul arrive as expected then I believe we are well equipped at the back to deal with our extra long season so long as we don't lose Sol Campbell.

That just leaves fixing the wide positions which Harry has already partly done by bringing Glen Little to the club. Perhaps his arrival will give John Utaka the kick up the arse he needs to produce the goods he promised at the start of last season when he looked like constant threat.

Even if he did improve this season, I'm sure Harry would still like to bring Wright-Phillips to Pompey. If he did arrive then what would that mean for the Nigerian?

Would he be sold to fund the deal or could Harry convert him into a striker? After all when Utaka first arrived he claimed his favoured position was centre forward.

Or how about moving him to left wing so Kranjcar can play in the centre? That would give us genuine pace on the wings and a creative influence in the centre.

I don't think we could rely on Pedro Mendes to deliver all season as he hasn't really been the same since the Thatcher incident. Niko, on the other hand could be that extra bit of class we missed in the centre last season.

The bottom line is that I don't believe that the arrival of Wright-Phillips would mean the end of Utaka's Pompey career because the Nigerian isn't just confined to playing on the right wing and could be a useful utility man if he can improve his consistency.

There is still plenty of time to go in this transfer window but I hope we can tie up a couple of deals before we play for our first piece of silverware next week!
