It's hundreds of years ago, on a moor far away. The mist is rolling in. A witch suddenly appears and throws down a crystal ball. "AAAAAH!" she screams. "From the end of the 20th century, Portsmouth strikers shall be struck down by vile injuries!" Suddenly she disappears as soon as she had appeared, and no-one has a clue what she was talking about.
If you want to blame anyone, blame Paul Walsh. When his knee clicked in such wonderful fashion and forced him to retire, little did he realise that he was kicking off (excuse the pun) a horrible tradition of injuries that would haunt right up until the present day. Even more brilliantly, his injury was to the knee - something that would return to cut down Allen, Mills, Burchill, Todorov, Pericard, Bradbury - need I go on?
"OK," so you're saying. "This is a fascinating history lesson. Why mention it now?" I'll tell you why, wise guy. According to rumours circulating in the press, both Azar Karadas and Collins Mbesuma are doubts for the match against Tottenham this Saturday. The former needed six stitches to the knee after suffering an injury against Den Haag last Friday (who, incidentally, have taken Alex Rodic on trial) whilst the latter, Collins, is reported to also be injured - an idea dismissed by Joe Jordan - but given how he only arrived in the country on Tuesday the chances of him making an appearance against Spurs look a touch on the slim side. Coming on as a sub (and hopefully scoring a hat trick) is the best we can hope for.
LuaLua is a definite starter, clearly, but other than that there's problems afoot. Keene, anyone?
