Spot Kick Woe At Ewood Park

Blackburn took advantage of a woeful Pompey performance to ensure they'll be staying in the Premier League whilst our fans could be forced to endure a tense end to the season.

At first glance this game may look like it was decided by two penalties, one which Benni McCarthy dispatched like a good striker should and the other which was blazed over by John Utaka with minutes to go.

We actually started brightly as Rovers looked vulnerable on the wings and we kept the ball well and forced a couple of corners. However, that didn't last long and once again David James gifted the opposition the opening goal of the game.

England's number one goalkeeper came out to claim a ball that should have been his but he seemed to hesistate and the ball broke to Morten Gamst Pedersen who slotted in an easy goal.

Sam Allardyce's side took control of the game after that and Pompey's only attempt on goal in the first half came when Hermann Hreidarsson headed wide from Sean Davis' free kick.

Paul Hart's response to a poor first half performance was to take off Belhadj and Hughes for Utaka and Kanu just minutes into the second half but Blackburn were awarded a penalty after Hermann leant into the ball with his hand and McCarthy scored to give the home side a comfortable lead.

Pompey rarely looked like scoring as Blackburn coasted the game. There was a scare when Jermaine Pennant's cross narrowly avoided the far post and Hreidarsson couldn't turn it in.

But the best two chances fell to John Utaka. The first one after he was put through by Kanu and he rounded Paul Robinson only to strike his shot straight at the backtracking Ryan Nelsen (it was probably going wide anyway).

The second one was an inexcusable miss as Keith Andrews was harshly judged to have handled the ball in the box with three minutes to go. Utaka stepped up and ballooned his shot well over the bar as Pompey fans streamed out of Ewood Park knowing that the game was lost.

Paul Hart said that this was the worst performance since he took over and I certainly agree with that.

James was to blame for the first goal, Kaboul and Johnson were lacklustre on their return to the side and the midfield had no creativity again so Crouch was ineffective on his own yet again.

Only Sol Campbell can come out of that game with any credit. He fought for every ball, won most of the headers and at times seemed on a one man mission to drive the team forward. Is he playing for a new contract?

Credit goes to Hart for trying to change things but his stubborn team selection is starting to irritate Pompey fans.

How Angelos Basinas can't get into the team ahead of the constantly poor Hayden Mullins is anyone's guess whilst there have been calls to play 4-4-2 from the start now that the team can't benefit from Niko Kranjcar's advanced role.

I also can't understand why Nadir Belhadj was taken off. Blackburn looked weak on the right and every time the Algerian surged forward it looked like we might create something.

This result now has fans talking about how important the Sunderland game is now but funnily enough we could be safe before we have even kicked a ball next Monday.

If Hull fail to beat Bolton on Saturday and either Newcastle or Middlesbrough take less than three points from their next two games then we'll be safe. It's just sad that such a poor performance yesterday has meant we have to rely on other teams' results to be sure of another season in the Premier League.
