Steve Cotterill has confirmed that he is interested in loaning one of Chelsea's young stars after a conversation with manager Andre Villas-Boas.
According to the local news, the youngsters in question are left backs Ryan Bertrand & Patrick van Aanholt and winger Gael Kakuta.
21-year-old Bertrand has had loan spells in the Championship in previous years, spending the first half of last season at Nottingham Forest where he excelled after a successful previous campaign at Reading the year before that. He has also been borrowed by Norwich, Oldham and Bournemouth.
20-year-old van Aanholt also has Championship experience as he has had loan spells at Coventry, Newcastle and Leicester but they have all been cut short due to Chelsea losing players to the African Nations Cup and injury has also played its part.
20-year-old Kakuta is seen as one of football's rising stars and spent the second half of last season on loan at Fulham where he scored once in seven appearances.
I'd be delighted if Bertrand was to join Portsmouth as he would be one of the best left backs in the division with his pace going forward a considerable asset as well as his ability to swing in a quality cross.
Kakuta is also a prospect that would excite Pompey fans as, in theory, he has the ability to make a mockery of Championship defenders and should score goals if he doesn't try one trick too many and as long as he's not too selfish.
My only concern about these two players is that they both have experience in the top flight now and would surely be coveted by Premier League clubs that we simply can't compete with.
I've not seen enough of van Aanholt to pass judgement on him but we do need a left back with Hermann Hreidarsson surely not being able to play every game and with Cotterill seeing Ben-Haim as a potential right back.
If there is a decision to be made then it won't be for a couple of weeks yet as Villas-Boas takes his squad on an Asian tour where he can assess them ahead of loaning out any fringe players.
In other news, Pompey have taken 30-year-old central defender Shavar Thomas on trial. The Jamaican captain is currently on the books of Sporting Kansas City and has spent the vast majority of his career playing in Major League Soccer.
