Pompey owner Sacha Gaydamak had confirmed yesterday what we all knew already: Portsmouth Football Club are up for sale.
The news may have been as shocking as a Southampton defeat, but at least it is assuring to hear these words come from the owner himself and not some gutter rag. It is also very reassuring to know that he has already turned down two offers because he believed that the bidders didn't have Pompey's best interests at heart.
It's also good to hear from his own mouth that the club won't be forced to sell any star players with manager Tony Adams reinforcing this by saying he would only sell if "silly money" was offered, so it's a shame that Man City are around then...
Sacha has revealed it is a wrench to leave "the best fans in football" behind and I will be sorry to see him leave after all he has done for us. But if he really doesn't have time (and maybe the money) for us anymore then to sell the club is the only logical thing to do.
The club have been quick to dismiss reports that a South African consortium were close to taking over, with some gutter rags claming that Avram Grant would immediately take over from Tony Adams once the new owners were in place.
However, they did admit that a South African consortium were in contact weeks ago though no formal offer had been made. I expect that they will make some sort of offer in the future but if the tabloids are correct, Sacha wouldn't sell to them as it would mean booting Adams out when he's hardly had a chance to prove himself as a manager.
Hopefully a deal can be done by January to give Pompey some much needed spending power if we're serious about qualifying for Europe again next season. Though we'll all have Sacha to thank for laying down some very strong foundations.
