Ritchie De Laet has today told the local news that he wishes to return to Pompey on loan next season.
The Belgian defender states that breaking into the first team is still his ultimate aim but he's happy to be playing regularly at Portsmouth and "would definitely like to come back" next season.
I've not mentioned De Laet too much in my praise for players this season but he certainly deserves many plaudits for his performances since arriving from Old Trafford.
Sine he first pulled on a Pompey shirt he has been there to make crucial tackles and bomb forward down the right wing when he can. He works well with Dave Cotterill and he's calm when shielding the ball out of play rather than rash.
In a nutshell, he is a class act and should he be made available for loan next season then Steve Cotterill must make his signing a priority, should the owners (whoever they may be) sanction it.
The only downside to bringing De Laet back would be that Joel Ward's development may be hindered further if his natural right back position was to be taken next season.
Pompey's local youngster hasn't been able to get into the team recently despite being arguably our most consistent performer throughout the entire season and he needs to play if he to continue to get better.
Should De Laet return then I'm not sure where Ward would stand in terms of getting first team football. Though given how versatile he is, I'm sure there is a position for him in the team and he's certainly shown that he is capable.
That shouldn't detract from Ritchie's own performances this season and he has been one of our most consistent players. He's not good enough to play for Manchester United regularly but I'm sure most of the Pompey fans would welcome him back with open arms.
So, Steve, sign him up! (If you're allowed....)
