A young Pompey side were beaten by their Championship rivals on a night with little to cheer about at Fratton Park. Indeed, the freezing conditions and early announcement of a youthful squad on the internet meant that less than 200 people were out to see the game.
For those hardy few the only really recognisable names were Rodic and Mezague, both fighting for match fitness. The first half contained few chances for either side although it was the visitors who went closest on a couple of occasions, including a misguided cross that landed on the roof of the net.
Unfortunately the lack of cutting edge continued for us in the second half, whilst the Hornets started to pile on the pressure. Coleman shot at Guatelli who fumbled the shot, allowing the striker to finish on the rebound. The pressure continued on the Italian's goal with barely a Pompey chance to speak of. The interestingly named Diaggouraga made the result secure with a little under a quarter of an hour to go, scoring with a volley.
Indeed Watford's pressure continued until the final whistle, although to our credit we battled constantly. Still as with all reserve matches it's not really the result that's important - it's nice to see the likes of Keene, Fordyce, Horsted and Harris getting the chance to play against better opposition than the junior leagues every week. Unless we win of course, then obviously the result IS important.
