And following Paul Merson's leave of absence this month to attend an addiction clinic in Arizona, Redknapp said: "Paul was different class for us last season. But he took a lot of looking after.
"I didn't mind the extra work of keeping him on the level for one year but I don't think I could have done two."
Redknapp added that it was the fear that Merson's personal life was not completely in order that convinced him to sanction Merson's move to the Saddlers.
