Redknapp: squad must be strengthened

Redknapp, speaking after the Bournemouth game, made comparisons with his side's 5-4 defeat in Dorset and his former club, relegated West Ham, who smashed the Cherries 4-0 a few days earlier.

"Some of them out there...won't be in my team...we're hoping to get Stefanovic through on his work permit appeal, and I want another defender" said Redknapp.

The defense and the midfield are proving a big headache for Harry, but in attack things are going well, with Svetoslav Todorov agreeing a 2 year extention to his contract after other Premiership clubs were sniffing around, Yakubu hoping to bit fit for the season's opener against Aston Villa and Vincent Pericard is close to signing as Pompey and Juventus move nearer to common ground.

But Redknapp is concerned on the strength in depth of his squad, adding "if (my substitutes) couldn't get in the team in the First Division, how will they get into it in the Premier League?"

Words Portsmouth would be wise to heed, as Bolton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest are two teams to have recently stormed Division One yet make an immediate return, whilst 2002 remains the only year in which all three promoted clubs stayed up since the formation of the Premier League in 1992.
