Rumours started to surface earlier this week that Harry Redknapp was ready to quit the club, possibly joining Tottenham.
The catalyst for this was the rumour that Harry Redknapp's assistant, Jim Smith, was ready to be axed by chairman Milan Mandaric and replaced with some kind of 'Super-coach'; a term which brings up some strange mental images.
But Mandaric's claims that he wanted to restructure the managerial term left many observers assuming that this left no room for the 63-year old Smith.
Mandaric refutes this is so, saying: "I spoke to Harry about what we can do better in the future, and all of a sudden, less than 24 hours later, everyone in the whole country is talking about Jim Smith and Kevin Bond being fired. I'm sorry, I just don't understand that.
"We have to sit down and talk about the reorganisation of the club. I have tremendous respect for Jim Smith but I have to look at what is best, not for me or Jim Smith, but for the club."
Harry Redknapp has denied that he is ready to leave the club, and has said on public record that he will not join Spurs, and that Portsmouth will be his final club. But, in many ways, the ball is in Mandaric's court. Where it goes from here will be most interesting.
