"We have no doubts about Fabrizio's ability and Harry really rates him," said Smith.
"We would still like to bring him to Fratton Park.
"We had everything set up in the summer. We struck a deal with Derby and with Fabrizio over his wages, but Derby decided at the last minute that he wasn't for sale.
"Since then he has been injured for a long time and we couldn't take a chance on taking him, but now he is fit again.
"We are keen on Deon Burton, but the chairman would not let us take both of them. So we will have to wait and see."
