Vice-captain Nigel Quashie has shocked the club and fans by today announcing that he wants to re-unite with Harry Redknapp at Southampton. Yes, this is the same Nigel Quashie who once claimed he'd want to spend the rest of his career here; the same Quashie who clapped along to "if you all hate the scummers"; the same Quashie who professed his love for the club and fans.
The whole story started earlier in the week with an alleged Southampton offer of £1.5m, something laughed off by many sources - including this site. Why would he want to become a hated man in the city that helped resurrect his career, as well as a joining a club who could realistically be relegated this campaign?
Everything seemed to go quiet, but now a new £2m offer has been put in and this morning the whole thing was blown wide open by Milan's claim that Quashie wanted to leave the club and was interested in re-uniting with Redknapp, Smith and Bond at St Mary's. Later this morning, Mr Mandaric has been on Sky Sports News saying there will be a meeting later on today to try and persuade Quashie that his long-term future lies at Fratton Park, rather than making the dangerous trip down the coast.
As far as I'm concerned, if this is true, he can get the hell away from the club and stay away. Even if he can't agree terms with Southampton, I never want to see him pull on the royal blue ever again for the way it seems he's willing to turn his back on this club without a second thought.
