As we reported a few days ago, Robert Prosinecki had decided to stay with Pompey due to the fact that Harry Redknapp has been appointed manager and is willing to make Prosinecki the centre of his team for next season.
The Croat feels that Pompey have a great chance of success next season and spurred on by his loyalty towards Mandaric was ready to pledge his future to Pompey for next season. However initial talk was of two Japanese clubs offering £15,000 a week - something that Mandaric would of been willing to match. However this now seems wide of the mark.
According to The News, Japan's most famous side, Grampus Eight, are prepared to make Prosinecki one of the highest paid players in the world, offering him a three year deal worth £7.5million - £50,000 a week. Money that Mandaric wouldn't be able to match and money that is provididing a tremendous lure for the Croat, after one last pay day before he retires.
After meeting Prosinecki in Cafe Uno at Port Solent, it seems that the Chairman is no longer confident that he can hang onto his most prized player. He told the Evening News "I'm less confident today about Robbie staying than I was before the meeting. I know in his heart he wants to stay here, but unfortunately they are offering him an additional two to three years and far more money than I thought they were."
However it seems that the Chairman isn't ready to give up yet, stating: 'But I haven't given up yet. We will be talking again and he has promised me he will make a final decision next week. I don't want to start putting pressure on him, however. I'm delighted he's been here a year. I'm not giving up, but I understand his circumstances.'
Prosinecki, is happy at Pompey, but it seems that the smell of money could prize him away from the club, leaving a void that Pompey might never be able to replace.
