Price To Pay

A report today has shown that season ticket prices are inflating with Portsmouth hiking theirs up more than most other Premier League club.

Although the report can be seen as misleading, Pompey fans who haven't yet bought a season ticket can be expected to fork out up to £770 for 19 league games at Fratton Park, which works out at £40 a game.

That price seems extortionate when the likes of Wigan are only charging £15 per match but then with the smallest stadium in the Premier League it's completely understandable that we have to charge higher prices to financially compete with the likes of Tottenham and Aston Villa.

Saying that, a full house for one match is only going to pay for Sol Campbell's wages for a couple of months so the difference this hike is making to the club seems minimal (though I'd love to be proved wrong. Could that extra money be going towards the new training ground development perhaps?)

The main thing I'm worried about is that these price hikes are going to continue to alienate the core PFC fanbase. Portsmouth is not a city that is known for its high earners and we have already seen evidence of fans voting with their feet. Many games at Fratton Park haven't sold out and Carling Cup attendances have been disappointingly low.

Apparently Peter Storrie is going to reveal the plans for the new ground in the next two weeks and I hope that ticket prices will fall once it is built otherwise there is absolutely no chance we will fill a 36,000 seater stadium on a regular basis.

The potential is there, 200,000 people on Southsea common proved that but we are not walking wallets and if the club treat us as such then I can see attendances continue to fall in the years building up to the potential opening of the new stadium.

On a final note, I'd like to express my condolences to the family of Pompey legend Ray Flewin who captained the championship winning side of 1949 as a local lad. He died aged 87 and I'm sure all Pompey fans will mourn him.
