Portsmouth's guide to the Premiership - conclusion

Last updated : 15 August 2003 By Alex Dale
Newcastle United

Last Season: 3rd

In: Bowyer (West Ham)
Out: Beaumont (Nottm Forest), Gardner (Nottm Forest), Karelese (Released), Kendrick (1860), Robson (Released)

The good news is Newcastle haven't added to their squad - the bad news is, they don't really need to. Newcastle have a young, powerful squad who can beat anyone. However, a lack of transfer activity has meant that Newcastle will fail to improve on their 3rd spot last season.
Key Player: Jermain Jenas (M) Solano will be out for Peru for much of the season so Jenas will need to fill the gap at left midfield.

Southampton

Last Season: 8th

In: Folly (St Etienne), Hall (Oldham), Kenton (Norwich), Le Saux (Chelsea), McCann (Glasgow Rangers), Phillips (Sunderland)
Out: Bridge (Chelsea), Crowell (Wrexham), Davies (Bolton), Howard (Swindon)

Truth be told, Southampton will struggle to emulate last season's success. Much has been made of the potential strikeforce of Beattie and Phillips, but they are very simular players and could well fail to live up to expectations. Now other teams expect things from the Saints, a return to the bottom half could be on the cards. Portsmouth will relish the chance to debut at the St Mary's stadium.
Key Player: Chris Marsden (M) was influential in the centre of the park and Southampton will hope he can hold out for another season...

Tottenham Hotspur

Last Season: 10th

In: Kanoute (West Ham), Postiga (FC Porto), Zamora (Brighton)
Out: Ehterington (West Ham), Freund (Kaiserlautern), Iversen (Wolverhampton), Sheringham (Portsmouth), Sutton (Raith Rovers), Thatcher (Leicester), Thelwell (Hull)

Tottenham have revamped their attack this season, but have failed to offload misfit Sergi Rebrov so far. White Hart Lane has been a striker's graveyard for years, so the new signings need to get the best out of Robbie Keane. The rest of the team looks standard and injury-prone, so another poor season beckons for the proud North London side.
Key Player: Freddie Kanoute (F) will need to settle his young counterparts up front.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Last Season: Play-off winners (beat Sheffield United 3-0)

In: H Camara (Sedan), Craddock (Sunderland), Iverson (Tottenham), Luzhny (Wolverhampton), Okoronkowo (Dontesk)
Out: Branch (Bradford), M Camara (Burnley), Edworthy (Norwich), Pollet (Released)

Well, Wolves finally made it, but they may not be around for long. A poor pre-season, the worst being a 6-1 drubbing by non-league Morecambe, plus a struggle to get new signings in could spell trouble for the West Midlands side. Plus, will the legs of Paul Ince and Dennis Irwin hold up?
Key Player: Jocelyn Lescott (D) tremendous prospect who no less deserves a crack at the big time as Portsmouth's own Matt Taylor does.
