Portsmouth vs Crystal Palace Preview

Last updated : 23 August 2010 By Jim Bonner
It was only two years ago that Pompey didn't even have to play in this round of the Carling Cup because of European commitments, but tomorrow they have the difficult task of getting past Crystal Palace if they are to advance to round three.

Team News

Steve Cotterill is likely to field the same side that lost at Preston on Saturday simply because he has no other choice, with John Utaka still sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Palace will be without centre back Claude Davis after his red card at Ipswich, whilst Edgar Davids is still not fit enough to play. Pablo Counago may be handed his Eagles debut.

The Match

Pompey have a lot in common with tomorrow's opponents. Both have survived winding up orders, both have previously been managed by Paul Hart, both have sold promising youngsters to pay the bills and both play in ramshackle stadiums with a bit of character about them.

I'm too bothered about what happens during this game in all honesty. Sure, it would be nice to have a cup run to lift the spirits but the league is far more important and we simply cannot afford to play the same players during midweek, with a league game to come just days after.

I am expecting an improvemt on Saturday's atrocity though, it can't be any worse, that's for sure.
