Portsmouth vs Arsenal Preview

Last updated : 01 May 2009 By Jim Bonner
Pompey can secure a seventh season in the top flight if they can record a first victory over Arsenal in the Premier League tomorrow at Fratton Park.

Safety will be mathematically guaranteed if Pompey win and both Middlesbrough and Newcastle lose to Manchester United and Liverpool respectively.

There won't be a better time to play an Arsenal side are hit by injury and that will have key players rested for the Champions League semi-final against United on Tuesday. The only guarantee will be that Andrey Arshavin will play as he cannot feature for the Gunners in Europe.

Paul Hart has hinted that Jermaine Pennant could start after his good performance when coming off the bench against Newcastle although Younes Kaboul is pushing for a place in the team himself after recovering from injury.

Arsene Wenger has promised that he will send out a strong side at Fratton Park tomorrow although he admits a couple of players will be rested. Wenger is also missing Robin van Persie, Mikael Silvestre, Gael Clichy and Eduardo because of injury.

This is a great chance not only to secure our Premier League status but to finally get one over the gooners. We've come close to beating them on numerous occasions but fate has conspired against us every time, so perhaps tomorrow will be our lucky day.

Pompey's best chance came when Benjani raced clear of the Arsenal defence only to give the ball a heavy touch when attempting to round Almunia. The Gunners almost escaped with three points when Tomas Rosicky curled wide in the dying seconds but Pompey became the first team to stop Arsenal scoring in the league last season.

Pundit Watch

Lawro: Home Win (2-1)
Sky Sports: Draw (1-1)
Soccernet: Draw

My Prediction: Arsenal may be diluted but they are still a very good side and haven't been beaten in the league since November. That said, if Crouch can perform how he usually does against them then he is going to cause some problems. I reckon this will be an entertaining draw.
