Pompey's first ever UEFA Cup opposition come in the form of Portuguese club Vitoria S.C, better known as Vitoria Guimaraes.
The Blues might have drawn Wolfsburg of Germany, Kayserispor of Turkey, Red Bull Salzburg of Austria or Kaunas of Lithuania as they were the other four unseeded teams in Pompey's group.
The good news is that the travelling Pompey fans will be treated to a nice trip to Guimaraes, Portugal which isn't too far from major cities Lisbon and Porto. Most would agree that a short flight to the land of Pedro Mendes (who began his career with Vitoria) is better than a long trip to Turkey or Lithuania.
The bad news is that this was probably the toughest draw out of the five that we could have had. Guimaraes are not to be taken lightly having finished third in the Portuguese league last season and will surely be stiff opposition for a Pompey side who are yet to find any form.
The first leg of this first round tie will take place at Fratton Park on the 18th of September with the return leg to be played at the 30,000 seater Estadio D. Afonso Henriques on the 2nd of October.
I'm already looking forward to the start of our European adventure. Hopefully it doesn't end prematurely.
