Pompey toast a fine win

Pompey were left licking their wounds in December after two St Marys drubbings left Portsmouth in the relegation zone and out of the Carling Cup. And, although Pompey remain in the bottom three, we now have a real chance of survival.

The strong winds helped Pompey in the early going as Yakubu ran riot, but a combination of poor finishing and determined Saints defending kept the game level.

Teddy Sheringham and Alexei Smertin also came close as Pompey dominated, by as ever Finnish keeper Antti Niemi was on top form.

Southampton were reduced to only pot shots from afar on the whole, but it wasn't until the 68th minute that Portsmouth made their possession count.

Stone gave an unmarked Yakubu a fine cross into the area and the Yak made good on the finish to give Portsmouth the lead. Alas, this woke Southampton up and they, particularly Kevin Phillips, ensured Shaka Hislop earnt this weeks paycheck.

Southampton were desperately unlucky not to equalise when Philips's volley cannoned off the woodwork with time running out, but, when you're down at the bottom, who cares about luck?
