Pompey are set to bring in Manuel Fernandes! Shock! Horror! How many times have we heard this statement in the last week? In fact, replace Fernandes with anyone who fits any of the following criteria: available, expensive, past Pompey player, young foreigner with potential, Sol Campbell or "good player who plays in inferior league" and viola, new headline!
It's all getting rather tedious now. Pompey have been linked to practically every player going yet we've officially denied going for many of them. And just to remind the stupid football fans who have no brains, the journo's decide to recycle these stories every few days just to refresh our memories that we now have lots of money! Actually this makes me laugh because a website reported that Farfan would be within our reach despite a fee of around 10 million pounds. That same day the same site claims that Harry Redknapp is being "priced out" of a move for Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari, who is valued at around 6 million pounds. Where's the logic in that!?
It's all getting very boring now. Time and time again you see the headlines "Petrov in Pompey link" then the next day "Petrov wants transfer" then the following day "Petrov doesn't want to stay at Celtic" then the next day, or maybe two if you're lucky "Petrov claims Celtic won't win SPL and wants to move (hint hint)". And all it is is the same story, maybe with a couple of different quotes and a different headline but it still gets very repetitive.
It all seems very lazy. I can just imagine some of the tabloid offices "Oh, Pompey haven't been linked to Steve Sidwell yet, better make sure he is now!" or "Nicholas Anelka isn't being linked to anyone at the moment, oh look Pompey have lots of money so let's link him to Fratton Park on a possible loan deal, because that makes lots of sense!" Or perhaps if they really get bored "We haven't reminded the Pompey fans that Sol Campbell may or may not be moving to their club. Better recycle that story for the tenth time!" Can't these guys get paid for doing something more productive? The epitamy of laziness is when you look on a Pompey page to see the headline "Return of the Yak" which refers to Yakubu getting his visa so he can train with Middlesbrough again. What has this got to do with us? Oh yeah we were "in for him" about a month ago!
The local rag is just as bad too. EXCLUSIVE: POMPEY IN FOR £10 MILLION DEFOE, not so long afterwards Harry denies any contact with that player whatsoever. If anyone thinks that he might be denying it to try and get a deal done just remind yourselves, this is Harry Redknapp. "The News" also has a habit of making up links to players that are then never heard of again.
It's all very boring, let's just hope we see some proper results in the coming days and not just your usual links to Campbell, Fernandes, Anelka etc.
