Pre-season expectations from Pompey fans may have taken a dent this afternoon after Andy Awford's men were soundly beaten by Conference South side Ebbsfleet United.
The non-league team took the lead on 20 minutes as Charlie Sheringham (son of Teddy) converted Billy Bracknell's cross. Pompey didn't create many chances of note as Jed Wallace shot narrowly wide but that was as good as it got in the first half.
The home side doubled their lead after the break as Bricknell headed in a cross from close range completely unmarked. Sheringham then scored his second goal of the game after Paul Jones could only parry a cross straight into the striker's path.
The usual slew of Pompey substitutes happened during the second half but none of them could make a difference although Alex Wynter shot straight at the goalkeeper late in the game. 3-0 was the final result for a team who have already hammered Dagenham & Redbridge 4-0 and also beaten Charlton in pre-season too.
Fans who were there are slamming the defence and highlighting their lack of pace which exposed them down the wings. Andy Awford seemed more concerned about his team's lack of conviction going forward rather than the defensive frailties of his team as he's confident he can correct the back four's mistakes.
The players had been put through rigourous training during the week and that may have had an impact on the result but at least now there won't be any complacency from anyone associated with Pompey when it comes to the fixtures that actually matter.
Pompey will have a chance to put aside any doubts heading into the season opener at Exeter in a fortnight's time when they take on Bournemouth on Tuesday night at Fratton Park.
