Pompey Suffer Controversial Heavy Defeat

Last updated : 25 March 2010 By Jim Bonner
I thought I'd wait until today to do this piece as Pompey's 5-0 defeat to Chelsea left a very bitter taste in the mouth.

This was supposedly Pompey's heaviest home defeat for 55 years and all the fingers of blame are going to be pointed sharply in the direction of referee Lee Mason who was an absolute disgrace to his profession last night.

I'll get all of the diatribe out the way now, because dwelling on it will only anger me more.

The first goal was comical yet would never have been conceded if Mason blew up for what was a blatant foul on O'Hara by Zhirkov.

What followed that was a calamity of errors and bad luck which saw both Hreidarsson and Rocha jump and miss the ball, meaning James was forced to come rushing out of his area to beat Drogba to a punt, only for the ball to hit a divot meaning the Pompey 'keeper missed the ball completely and allowed Chelsea to score probably the luckiest goal in their history.

But that was just the start of the injustice as Florent Malouda got away with a nasty elbow on poor Ricardo Rocha who is likely to miss the rest of the season with a fractured cheekbone. I thought it was a red card offence then, and still think it's a dismissal now having seen the replays and considered what else Mason dished out yellows for.

Tommy Smith then had to be substituted after Daniel Sturridge's flailing arm caught him. Unlike Malouda, I don't think there was any intent from Sturridge who seemed to know nothing about the incident.

So Pompey went into the break trailing to an extremely fortuitous goal and having made two enforced substitutes. I'll pause my rant here and take a minute to acknowledge the superb work of the stewards who dealt with the half-time incident in the north stand promptly and effectively.

I feared the worst as the man was applauded off of Fratton Park but reports suggest he's in a stable condition and will hopefully make a full recovery.

What he missed in the second half was a total annilhilation by Carlo Ancelotti's men after two goals scored by a player who shouldn't have been on the pitch. Malouda slammed in a second following a dribble down the left and then hammered home a rebound after James had parried Lampard's initial effort.

John Terry, who had been receiving some mild abuse as expected from the home fans, turned to the Fratton End and gave an "ear cup" gesture after the third goal went in which simply turned the crowd against him further and turn the Fratton Park atmosphere nasty.

Chelsea grabbed another after Drogba shrugged off Finnan far too easily and beat James at his near post. Richard Hughes had a chance for a consolation but somehow managed to put his header wide and the rout was complete in stoppage time when some more woeful defending allowed Lampard to head in from a yard out.

That put an end to a dire evening which was capped with the news that Tottenham will await Pompey at Wembley for the FA Cup Semi-Final, meaning O'Hara is denied his chance to perform on the big stage and Defoe, Crouch and Kranjcar all will be playing against the club they were representing last season.

As for yesterday's defeat, I was disappointed that Avram decided to try and "contain" Chelsea when whenever I've seen them get a bad result, it's always because the opposition aren't scared to stick it to them.

We could argue that we should have been level for much longer in the game and should have been playing ten men but the bottom line is that we created barely anything all game.

And now that Pompey are down to the bare bones in terms of squad size thanks to injuries on and off the pitch, the future doesn't bode for us well as Wembley is just around the corner now.
