The speculation regarding Pompey's "deal of the century" has ended after former Swindon midfielder Simon Ferry signed a two-year contract today.
Prior to previous rumours, the player Guy Whittingham was chasing has no Premier League experience but did feature regularly in League One last season.
The 25-year-old is an energetic box-to-box central midfielder who proved very popular with Robins fans for his workrate. They seemed to be very disappointed when he was released due to financial reasons so it begs the question just how can Pompey afford his salary if it was too expensive for Swindon?
As for the player himself, he seems like an excellent signing on the face of it but then the same was said for Brian Howard and Darel Russell last season and look how well that turned out!
With Bird and Ferry now signed, there'll be no shortage of lame puns for the local media to use. That won't be a bad thing if the duo give them plenty of good reason to put them in the headlines.
In other news, a young Pompey XI were defeated 3-1 by Salisbury City yesterday evening in a friendly with Ashley Harris getting a late consolation goal.
