Pompey have signed 28-year-old Greek striker Theofanis Gekas on loan from Bayer Leverkusen until the end of the season with a view to a permanent deal.
Gekas has found himself out of favour with Leverkusen this season despite his previous excellent goalscoring record in Greece and his German golden boot in 2006/2007 for VfL Bochum having scored 20 times.
He plays for the national team too and scored against Italy after coming on as a substitute. Adams says he's a striker who will play off the shoulder of the last defender and should hit the ground running.
He may be prolific in Germany but the Bundesliga is a more expansive league where teams leave themselves more open, therefore making it easier to score. I hope Gekas can adapt to England where the majority of Premier League defences won't give him the time or space he had when playing for Bochum or Leverkusen.
This is a gamble by Tony Adams and surely he wouldn't have been allowed to sign Gekas if the rumours of his imminent sacking tomorrow were true. Let's just hope he is more successful than the last two Greeks to feature for Pompey!
Adams has also confirmed that a bid from a Premier League club for Sean Davis has been turned down and he would be "mad" to let the Pompey midfielder go.
That Premier League club was probably Bolton and I agree with Adams that it would be completely stupid to let one of our more consistent performers of the season leave for a team who are also down there with us.
The transfer window slams shut at 6pm tomorrow so will Pompey sign anyone else and will they let anyone go? Stay tuned to find out!
