Portsmouth could be owed £1 million should Liverpool lift the Premier League trophy this season.
This is reportedly due to a clause in Glen Johnson's contract which would see Pompey collect the extra money if the Reds win their first league title for 24 years.
It is thought that although the England right back was sold in June 2010, the clause still exists but we can't know for certain. After all, since Johnson's sale the club has changed ownership multiple times, been in administration twice and is technically not the same company anymore, so who knows if any of those details will affect the clause that Peter Storrie intially added to the deal? Mark Catlin has certainly been tight-lipped about the situation.
Even if it's a "maybe" then perhaps there will be a few extra Pompey fans who will be willing Liverpool to win the league this season anyway. Yes, some supporters are still bitter over 1992 but Pompey have won the FA Cup since then and have got one over the Scousers in previous years.
It's ironic that Southampton could help Pompey's cause on Saturday as they face Liverpool's main title rivals in Manchester City. Liverpool will be crowned champions anyway if they win their remaining games, something that isn't beyond them given how explosive they've been going forward this season.
So, perhaps we should be cheering on Liverpool, if only until May.
In other news, Bury beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 tonight which keeps the Pirates just a point and a place above Pompey in the League Two table. To illustrate how tight our division is, Bury were considered major relegation candidates recently but a little run of form now sees them sit 12th, 10 points clear of Northampton.
A win against Hartlepool would be most welcome on Saturday.
