Pompey bounced back from their weekend defeat by Newport with a comfortable 3-1 win away at League One Yeovil in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
Andy Awford made some changes to his side with Dan Butler, Alex Wynter, Nick Awford and Johnny Ertl all coming back into the fold. The first half was a rather dull affair by all accounts, with Yeovil having most of the ball but not creating anything against a rugged Pompey defence.
The visitors took the lead on 55 minutes when Jed Wallace smashed the ball into the bottom corner having linked up with Craig Westcarr. He got his second goal after receiving Wynter's pass and cooly finished past Chris Weale on the 73rd minute.
The win was virtually confirmed just a minute later as Westcarr lobbed the onrushing Weale after getting on the end of Miles Storey's pass. Yeovil pulled one back through a fierce strike by Nathan Ralph which beat Paul Jones but it only proved to be a consolation and Pompey are into the next round of the competition.
The only real bad news to come from this game is that Nigel Atangana limped off before half-time with what looks like a pulled hamstring. Hopefully his injury isn't too serious.
The result is an excellent one given that Awford rotated his team and still managed to win away at a League One ground without too much trouble. Johnny Ertl certainly came in for a lot of praise after the match due to his commanding performance at centre back highlighted by a magnificent triple challenge during the second half.
It will give the manager food for thought going into Sunday's match at Burton which will surely be tougher than this one tonight but hey, we're only six games from Wembley now!
The draw for the next round will take place this Saturday on Soccer AM.
