Pompey have confirmed the signing of left back Marcos Painter on a contract until the middle of January.
The ex-Brighton full back was released by the Seagulls in the summer having made over 90 appearances for them over three seasons.
He spent part of last season on loan at Bournemouth and Cherries fans are not giving him a ringing endorsement. He made just two appearances for Eddie Howe's team and was taken off at half-time in both matches before being recalled by Brighton.
Still, it's best to sit back and reserve judgement on a player who has plenty of experience at a higher level with our easterly neighbours. Seagulls fans say he's solid and should be a good signing for a League Two club.
He should go straight into the first team to play against Morecambe on Saturday given Whittingham's lack of a genuine left back now Dan Butler seems to be out of the picture for the time being.
And if Painter does turn out to be dross then at least he's only at Portsmouth until the new year. But hopefully he'll silence his early critics before being hit with "Carl Dickinson" syndrome.
