Pompey have finished their pre-season campaign unbeaten after a drab goalless draw with Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium today.
Enda Stevens was missing due to a family bereavement whilst Adam McGurk and Kal Naismith had minor injuries and are expected to train on Monday.
It also seems that Matt Clarke will officially be joining Portsmouth on loan from Ipswich as he was handed the number 20 shirt for the match and it also looks like Ben Davies will earn himself a contract judging by Paul Cook's post-match comments.
The closest either side came to scoring came in the first half when Davies smashed the crossbar with a free kick from just outside the box. Gary Roberts had a good shot blocked in the second half but that was as good as it got for those who travelled to Kent.
With pre-season over Cook admitted that the squad is still a work-in-progress and it will take time for his players to play well together as a team. There could be some new players signing during the week in time for the season opener with Dagenham but only if they can improve the quality of the squad, according to the manager.
Until then, we can all look forward to next Saturday with renewed optimism for an exciting and prosperous season ahead. Let's just hope that optimism isn't crushed within the first two months of the campaign this time!
