Pompey cruised to a 5-0 win over Kano Pillars in an empty national stadium in Abuja.
The team had a scare before landing as the plane wasn't cleared for landing in the Nigerian capital meaning the pilot had to abort and wait half an hour and brave the storm before completing the landing.
The 60,000 seater Abuja stadium was populated by around 500 fans for the game that was played in such poor conditions that the radio couldn't cover the game live, although it could be watched on AIT International (Sky Channel 198).
Celestine Babayaro returned to the side to continue his trial but David Nugent didn't travel with the squad so maybe there's a story to that.
John Utaka opened the scoring on 7 minutes and Ben Sahar made it 2-0 moments after Jamie Ashdown made a good save. The first half ended with Kanu poaching a goal after Papa Bouba Diop headed to him from a corner.
Harry Redknapp made wholesale changes in the second half as Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe played up front again. Crouch netted twice as Pompey tore apart the opposition and had the team been sharper the score would have been much harsher on the Pillars.
An easy win then, but it will surely be much tougher against Manchester United tomorrow.
