How nice it was to wake up to the sports headlines this morning and to see that Portsmouth Football Club is now free of its legacy debt having paid all creditors back what they were owed.
Better yet, these debts have been cleared 22 months early with around £7 million being paid in the space of 18 months. 24 former players, four foreign clubs, Portsmouth city council and property developer Stuart Robinson have now got what they are owed to finally bring an end to the years of debt-ridden existence.
To be officially debt free so soon is something to be commended by everyone who helped get this club back on its feet. It's an outstanding achievement with more to come in a new training ground later this year.
It's a victory for fan-owned football clubs which has gained recognition from other football clubs which have suffered a similar fate to Portsmouth in recent years.
But whilst this is a victory for fan ownership it can never claim to be truly successful until the actual team find some success, which means promotion back to the Championship in reasonable time.
With no more legacy debt it won't be long before Pompey are allowed to start spending some money again, and as long as it is done responsibly and the mistakes of the past are not repeated,
Andy Awford is now under even more pressure to deliver as there aren't any excuses not to get out of League Two now due to how Pompey's turnover dwarfs the rest of the division and now the Football League's restrictions have been lifted, it'll be interesting to see who Pompey could poach..
There's still plenty of work to be done but the memories of the hard times caused by a list of individuals which would make any Pompey fan shudder can now be banished and we won't have to put up with those stupid "pay up Pompey!" chants anymore!
