Portsmouth FC has shocked everyone by actually spending some money, hiring a new "head of recruitment" by the name of Luke Dowling.
Dowling was previously a scout at Wimbledon and Crystal Palace and has turned down roles at Premier League clubs to come to Pompey where he hopes to help Michael Appleton in identifying and signing new players.
"Head of recruitment" sounds just like the dreaded "director of football" role that has seen so many managers come to blows with their chairmen. A wise man would be putting money on Luke Dowling being appointed the next Pompey manager.
Unfortunately, Pompey's latest recruit can't actually do his job properly yet as the Football League are still yet to be satisfied with the club's wage bill and therefore the transfer embargo remains in place.
Those going to Westleigh Park to watch the first pre-season friendly in ten days' time may want to bring their boots.
