So being the geek I am I decided to do a little bit of research on not just how many penalties we've conceded but also how many have been awarded to us and how many have been missed by both Pompey and the opposition.
Why did I do this? Because I was certain that no other team has conceded more penalties nor have missed as many as we have this season. It turns out that I was right on both accounts (although Newcastle have conceded more in the league).
Pompey have conceded a staggering twelve penalties this season. Two in the FA Cup against Bristol City and Swansea, one in the Carling cup to Chelsea, two in the UEFA cup against Guimaraes and at Wolfsburg whilst the other six came in Premier League games.
Those were at Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Stoke and Blackburn with the only spot kicks awarded at Fratton Park to Wigan and Arsenal. Of all the penalties that have been given against us four of those (a third) were saved or missed.
On the other hand Pompey haven't been awarded a penalty since Boxing Day when Jermain Defoe put his effort wide against West Ham. He also missed at home to Guimaraes but scored against Spurs and Sunderland.
John Utaka is the only other player to have taken a penalty for us this season and no fan will need reminding how bad that effort was. Therefore, in total we have only had 5 spot kicks in our 45 games so far this campaign, three of which have failed to hit the back of the net! (60%)
