Out Of The Window?

Pompey fans were used to a turbulent and eventful January transfer window under Harry Redknapp with at least one big name player arriving but that has not been the case under Tony Adams.

The goings on in the past month have been described as "disasterous" by some Pompey fans. Two star players have left Fratton Park for a combined fee of £35 million yet only around £5 million has been reinvested into the team.

Fans have also been talking conspiracy theories with more than a few saying that we never had any more money to fork out on the likes of Saviola or Dos Santos and the talks of signing these players was just a pack of lies to keep the supporters "happy".

There is a fine line between being cynical and being naive so it's hard to judge just how much of what Storrie has been saying is completely true and how much he has exaggerated to appease the fans that have become disillusioned with the way our best squad in decades has been disintegrating.

I remember when Tony Adams claimed he'd have all the money from the Diarra sale to spend with the club actively "looking for replacements". That never happened and we end up bringing in a player who couldn't get into the West Ham side and a player who we were interested in signing four years ago when he wasn't past his best.

So with the harsh truth that he had little money available, Adams spent most of it on securing the permanent signing of Nadir Belhadj after an impressive loan spell. Funnily enough, the Algerian's performances have dipped with a couple of dire displays in his recent outings against Swansea and Villa. I hope this is just a blip and he returns to his best otherwise he could turn out to be a "Saganowski" as my Scummer friend said to me the other day.

I do have to commend Adams on doing what he could do to loan some players into the club. Jermaine Pennant looks like a useful acquisition whilst I'm actually excited by the prospect of Theofanis Gekas making a surprise impact at the club.

I can't understand why Pele was loaned in if he was only being considered for the future. I'm assured by Luis, my Guimaraes supporting friend that he is a "bad apple" and doesn't understand the meaning of the word "teamwork" so that doesn't sound too promising.

There was some good news during the window though as Glen Johnson wasn't tempted away by the big guns when everyone was resigned to losing him whilst our other important players such as Crouch and Davis have also stayed to fight off relegation.

You could also look at the situation another way and look what our relegation rivals have been doing during the window. Most of them have been less active than us and if anything, have weakened during the month bar Spurs who predictably changed their whole squad under Redknapp and Stoke who have made a couple of good buys.

It can be argued that the squad isn't the problem anyway and the players we have got should be good enough to keep us in the top flight. Whether the manager is good enough is another question entirely.

Still, for those of you who are underwhelmed by Pompey's transfer activity should give the likes of Basinas and Gekas a chance to prove that they won't go the same way as Skopelitis and Chalkias. I will stick my neck on the line and say that Gekas will be a cult hero if he is given the games for us.

But if you've already made your mind up that the players we've signed are awful then you only need to look 26 miles down the road and see what is happening to our nearest and dearest neighbours to realise that it could be much worse.

Southampton continue to be the laughing stock of Hampshire having trailed ten man Sheffield United for the majority of the game only to equalise in the 90th minute. But then Jamie Ward ensured the Pompey fans had a good laugh by going straight up the other end and scoring for the Blades!
