Non-Story

Today Niko Kranjcar stunned the football world by claiming that he wants to play for a bigger club in the future.

And he did not, I repeat, did not say anything about being content at Portsmouth at all and never mentioned that he was currently happy at Fratton Park and praising the club for aiming in the right direction.

Putting my serious hat back on now and I'm sure most of us can see that this is just another non-story produced by our local rag. I don't blame them as there's currently nothing else to report on apart from the squad coming back from a training session in Spain (whoopee!) and it's not like the article is deliberately written to make a mountain out of a molehill unlike some other gutter rags.

But there are always people that can only see the negative side of these stories and will see Kranjcar's words as a "come and get me" plea to the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool.

It's a common fact that talented players are going to want to play for the biggest clubs and so it should be no surprise that Kranjcar, Muntari and Diarra all have ambitions of playing for the best clubs in Europe.

But to do that they will have to earn that right by playing well consistently and if they're doing their best for Pompey then it'll only help the club to achieve its own ambitions and they could be sold for a massive profit if, or more likely when, they leave Pompey.

Stories like the one in The News today are starting to become more frequent because we have better players, it's as simple as that. It's further indication of how far we have come in a short space of time. I certainly can't remember the likes of Carl Tiler saying that they wanted to play for Arsenal!

Whilst a few people may see Kranjcar's words as a way of getting out of the club, most will just see it as honesty from a player who seems to respect the direction Pompey are going.

The most interesting thing will be his attitude if he is here next season and things start to go wrong and we find ourselves struggling. Would he want out straight away or would he help fight the Pompey cause?

Speaking of non-stories, Harry Redknapp has referred to the speculation regarding Kanu's link to Gold Coast Galaxy as "cobblers". The Nigerian was reportedly interested in a move to the Australian side but the Pompey gaffer is confident that he'll stay, especially as he only needs to play two more games to activate the extra year in his contract.
