There's been quite a bit of transfer speculation surrounding Fratton Park recently with the main subject of discussion being the future of Lomana LuaLua.
The flamboyant forward has been heavily linked to a move to Spanish side Espanyol after his recent comments in the newspapers. For the record, LuaLua said "When I watch Ronaldinho playing for Barcelona I say to myself: I can do what he's doing." Those laughable comments were followed up by the forward saying "Everyone has special gifts and fortunately I'm one of those players that can do unexpected and unpredictable things, but that is not always appreciated over here."
Now let's take a step back here. He's likened himself to probably the world's best player, which he is far far from despite the obvious skill he has. He's then basically said that sometimes he's not appreciated over here (with "here" meaning Portsmouth, as we're the only ones who watch him on a regular basis and vent our frustrations at him.)
Perhaps if Lomana focused more on team play rather than trying his tricks that often frustrate and rarely come off, then he would be appreciated more. I'd also suggest that the DR Congo man assumes that "unexpected and unpredictable" is a good thing and whilst it can baffle the opposition and make them look silly (like Southampton) it more often than not ends up confusing his own team mates and too much extravagance during build up play ends up with a misplaced pass, a shot well off target or the ball just simply being taken from him as he takes too much time to make a decision.
His failure to spot a simple pass to a team-mate and his frustrating knack for being caught offside or being the culprit for a promising move breaking down. The biggest issue is that he doesn't score enough goals for someone of his ability, and his finishing is something he really needs to improve on.
I think that LuaLua does come in for more stick than he deserves a lot of the time, with a lot of the criticism directed at him overly harsh. If he and Benjani performed as equally as bad as each other during a match, I'd put my house on LuaLua taking a lot more abuse from the fans than Benjani, the same fans that probably referred to him as a "legend" after scoring those two goals that ultimately buried the Scummers.
We should remember that LuaLua was a key part of our surge up the table in our first Premiership season where we ended up surviving with games to spare and he was a star performer in the season afterward too, linking up well with Yakubu. If he can reproduce the sort of form that made him a popular player in the first place, then the least we have is a strong squad player to come off the bench.
Harry Redknapp sums up my feelings with his own statement: "He has all that ability, fantastic skill, he just has to make the most of it."
Despite LuaLua's recent comments, Harry still wants to keep him at the club having said he still has a future at Pompey. Whether the player feels he is still wanted by the club or if he wants to go to Spain is up to him but the Pompey manager is confident that he will stay.
If he does leave then that would leave us short on strikers and with Mark Viduka on the way to Newcastle, there are a few other names that have been mentioned who have been linked with a move to Portsmouth.
Carlos Tenorio, remember him? He was Ecuador's top scorer in the World Cup last year and his agent called Harry and told him he was available for £6 million, which the Pompey gaffer laughed off. However, Tenorio's name is apparently in the hat for a possible transfer.
Other names include Marlon Harewood, who has been told that he can leave West Ham. I'd hope we'd leave him well alone as I believe he was just a "one season wonder" last year. Henri Camara and Nicholas Anelka have been linked to Pompey once again, as has former player Diomansy Kamara.
Pompey have also said that Middlesbrough have not made an enquiry about Sean davis despite reports saying they had.
That's it for now. It's good to see England win for a change. Who said dropping David Beckham was a good idea, eh?
