The Latics chairman blasted: We agreed a record transfer fee with his club and had offered him a very lucrative deal but unfortunately despite agreeing to come here his agent and him have made the decision to go to Portsmouth. It's very frustrating as we felt he'd agreed to become our player.

"It seems to me it was all down to how much he could get in his pocket so I don't know what Portsmouth have given him."

He also accused Roberts agent - his own uncle and former England stay Cyrille Regis of double dealing. Bur Roberts retaliated: "I had approaches from both Wigan and Leicester and I gave them the serious consideration they deserved,"

"But the opportunity to join Portsmouth was too hard to resist."
