I Return From Ibiza

Last updated : 07 September 2009 By Jim Bonner
As you may or may not have known I have been sunning myself on the wonderful island of Ibiza for the last week, hence the severe lack of updates! How typical it was that during the only time where I had hardly any access to the internet happened to be the most busiest time of the football year.

But I've returned from paradise and come back to the very harsh reality of normal life supporting a Pompey side which already look like they're in huge trouble, but not without hope. Here is what I made of the week along with some of the other developments going on such as the formation of the Pompey Virtual Alliance.

The Manchester City Match

I watched this in the hotel bar with some other Pompey fans and I wasn't majorly impressed with what I saw although our defeat came about because of a single piece of slack defending by Younes Kaboul and Aaron Mokoena, who both allowed Emmanuel Adebayor a free header at goal.

The sad fact is that Adebayor created more chances by himself than what the entire Pompey team managed during the game. Yet we almost snatched a point if it wasn't for David Nugent's inept finishing that summed up his Pompey career.

There were some positives as Brown and Smith had solid debuts and the defence weren't completely ripped apart by a team that has so much quality going forward, but the facts now state "Played 4 - Lost 4" and three of those have been 1-0 defeats, which clearly shows where our problems lie.

On a final note, I was disappointed to see such a low attendance for the match but at least Peter Storrie has done something about it and slashing the ticket prices for the games against lesser opposition is a good move and should ensure a full house for each match. I just hope the fully-paid-up season ticket holders will be rewarded for paying the full price before the season even began.

Transfer Deadline Day

I knew Paul Hart would be busy during deadline day but even I didn't expect what happened during the final few hectic hours of the transfer window.

I knew nothing of Hassan Yebda before we swooped for him on deadline day and although I hear he is more of a dog of war than a creator like Kranjcar, I shall reserve judgement until I see him play.

I like the signing of Tal Ben-Haim. He may have been of of many players to have lost his way since signing for Chelsea but back in his Bolton days he was considered one of the league's best defenders. If Hart can get the best out of him, we may have our replacement for Distin.

Mike Williamson also predictably arrived from Watford for a reported £3 million which is a huge fee for an unproven Championship defender. Hornets fans seem to rate him extremely highly though and he does give us another option at centre back if Hart wants to push Kaboul out to right back.

Nicky Shorey was also supposed to join on loan from Aston Villa but didn't want to sign for us because we couldn't guarantee him first-team football. I'm not too bothered that we've missed out on him as he's no better than Belhadj or Hreidarsson anyway.

Moving on to the departures and I was certainly not surprised that Niko Kranjcar left us to join Redknapp's reunion. After all, if your team are struggling then he is about as useful as a solar powered torch but he was the only creative influence in the side and now either K.P Boateng, Yebda or O'Hara are really going to have to step up to the mark.

What did surprise me was the alledged fee Tottenham paid us for his services - a paltry £2.5 million. I have heard since that the fee may be as high as £4 million but that is still outrageously cheap for a luxury player of his quality and I can't help but feel we have been ripped off.

It was only a year ago that Monaco were offering over £12 million for the Croat, so to get such a low fee will only deepen Pompey fans' dislike of Redknapp and Tottenham.

David Nugent also left on loan for Burnley and whilst there won't be many Pompey fans who care that he is off of our books, I can only see this as a lose-lose situation for us. If he is a success, then we'll look stupid for flogging him but if he flops, we won't even receive a fee for him and it will be even more difficult to shift him in the future.

I was worried that David James might be the final star name to ditch us but at least we would have got a decent goalkeeper in Carlo Cudicini in return, if rumours are to be believed. Jamo is a top professional and I'm sure he'll knuckle down, if only because he knows his World Cup place is under serious threat.

With Aruna Dindane unavailable until October, it looks like we'll be getting Henri Camara in as a stop-gap. I think he could have something to offer us and lets face it, we need anyone we can get up front right now.

Now is the time to judge Paul Hart as our first XI (bar James and Hreidarsson) is likely to contain all players signed by the current Pompey manager. Whether they'll be good enough and whether he'll be good enough to manage them is another issue altogether.

The Pompey Virtual Alliance

The "PVA" is a group of Pompey webzine editors from all around the world that share a common goal. We seek clarity about what is happening with the club and we wish to share our views with the likes of Peter Storrie and possibly Sulaiman Al-Fahim himself so they can understand our views and concerns.

Colin Farmery, author of many Pompey books, is the most notable member of our alliance and we hope to secure a meeting with either/or Peter Storrie and Sulaiman Al-Fahim in the very near future so we can air our views and get some answers to some questions we feel the Pompey fans would want to ask.

The alliance may not speak for everybody but I think that it is a very good idea and could have a positive influence on the club if it takes off. If there are any Pompey webzine editors who are reading this and aren't yet in the alliance, feel free to send me an e-mail requesting to join.

And Finally....

A huge thanks to the board moderators who dealt with the recent problems on the messageboard. Because of a serious lack of internet access during the week I have been completely unaware of the situation but I'm glad that it seems to have been sorted for the time being.

Now I've returned I plan to get back to updating the site every day, hopefully with some good news to report!
